How to swaddle a baby: a guide for parents

Most babies love to be swaddled as it’s thought to replicate the strong sense of security felt within the womb. But many new parents struggle with perfecting the technique. Here, we’ll explore the benefits of safe swaddling, share three popular swaddling techniques, and show you the steps towards a better night’s sleep.

Why Swaddle a Baby?

Swaddling can be a calming and comforting practice for newborns. Studies have shown that swaddling improves the quality of a baby’s sleep as they feel more secure and relaxed.

That said, not every baby will enjoy swaddling. Some may resist being wrapped, and that’s completely normal. Trust your parental instincts — if your baby seems happier without it, that’s perfectly fine.

Is Swaddling Safe?

When done correctly, swaddling is a safe and effective way to soothe a baby and promote rest. The key is ensuring your little one is snug, but not too tight. You should always be able to slide your hand between the fabric and your baby’s chest to check there’s enough room for comfort and airflow.

  • Always lay them on their back to sleep.
  • Use a firm, flat mattress.
  • Avoid loose sheets, pillows, or blankets in the crib.
  • Make sure there is space for natural hip and leg movement.

Benefits of Swaddling a Baby

  • Mimics the feeling of the womb, providing comfort.
  • Helps regulate body temperature.
  • May reduce colic symptoms by providing a gentle sense of security.
  • Protects against the natural startle reflex that can wake babies.
  • Prevents accidental scratching of the face.

What Type of Swaddle Should You Use?

There are a few different swaddle options, and the best choice depends on your baby’s needs and age:

  • Muslins: Lightweight and breathable, perfect for warmer weather.
  • Thin blankets: Flexible and versatile, but require more careful wrapping.
  • Swaddle bags: A fuss-free option with a practical design, offering safety and security without complex folding.

How to Swaddle a Baby

There are different techniques depending on your baby’s age and comfort. Below are three of the most popular methods.

1. The Hands Up Swaddle

For very young babies (the first couple of weeks), this technique keeps their arms near their face and legs in the natural frog position. It’s ideal until they’re ready to start stretching out.

How to Create the Hands Up Swaddle

  1. Place your muslin on a flat surface and ensure it’s big enough to cover your baby.
  2. Fold one corner down about the length of your baby’s body from neck to bum, forming a triangle.
  3. Tuck your baby’s left hand under the fold, then wrap that side across their body and tuck underneath.
  4. Fold up the bottom of the muslin and tuck just the tip into the top of the swaddle, leaving room for leg movement.
  5. Tuck the right hand under the fold so their hands rest near their face, then fold the fabric across their body. You should see a “V” under their chin.
  6. Wrap the right side all the way underneath and tuck in the corner.

2. The Burrito Wrap

As if your baby wasn’t yummy enough, this technique wraps them snugly like a little burrito. It works especially well with larger square or rectangular blankets and is one of the easiest to master.

How to Create the Burrito Wrap

  1. Lay the blanket flat and ensure it’s big enough (around 43 x 43 inches is ideal).
  2. Fold one corner down about 4 inches to form a diamond.
  3. Place your baby on their back with the fold just above their neck.
  4. Tuck their hands under the fold near their shoulders or face, or leave arms out and tuck under armpits (better for older babies).
  5. Fold the right side of the blanket across the body and tuck under the left side.
  6. Bring the bottom up towards the head and tuck securely into the top right fold.
  7. Wrap the left side across and tuck under the right.

3. The Simple Swaddle

Perfect for babies developing motor skills, this method helps prevent wake-ups caused by flailing limbs. It’s quick, easy, and keeps them secure through the night.

How to Create the Simple Swaddle

  1. Lay a square muslin flat and fold one corner down about a hand’s length.
  2. Place your baby face-up with the fold just above their neckline.
  3. Put their left arm by their side and fold the left corner across the body, tucking underneath.
  4. Repeat for the right side.
  5. Fold the bottom upwards and tuck securely.

How Long Can You Swaddle a Baby?

Babies can usually be swaddled until around 4 months old or until they show signs of rolling. Once they learn to roll, it’s no longer safe to swaddle — their arms need to be free to help them push up and reposition.

At this stage, many parents transition to sleeping bags, which provide safety and comfort without restricting movement. Learn more about our clever sleeping bags here.

Can You Breastfeed a Swaddled Baby?

It’s not recommended to breastfeed while your baby is swaddled. Being wrapped may cause overheating, and swaddling can make it harder to find a comfortable position for feeding. Babies also use their hands to help latch, so having them free makes nursing easier.

Conclusion

Swaddling can be a wonderful way to soothe your newborn and help them sleep better, as long as it’s done safely. From traditional muslins to modern swaddle bags, the right method and product can make bedtime calmer for both baby and parents.
