What To Do When Teething is Affecting Baby's Sleep

Did you notice your little one is starting to show some little white teeth? And also can’t sleep due to discomfort and pain? Between 4 months and 2 years, your baby will be getting a whole new 20 teeth, so it’s better to learn how to solve your little one’s sleeping problems while teething.

The Symptoms

Usually, parents do not notice teething until their little ones smiles, however there are some common symptoms to be aware of it earlier:

  • Drooling
  • Teething rash
  • Extra saliva might lead to diarrhea
  • Refusing to be feed, since the tender gums make it harder to nurse
  • Biting own hands or toys while you are breastfeeding
  • Ear-pulling
  • Cheek-rubbing
  • Waking up at night more frequently
  • More fussing/crying than usual
  • Low grade fever

How to Make Sure Your Little One is Sleeping 

Teething can be so uncomfortable for your baby, and this can lead to sleepless nights, for you as well! There is some advice that we can provide to comfort your little one during this period and make sure that it doesn’t affect sleep routine.

Giving teething toys/rings during daytime.

Teething objects are great to help minimise your little one’s pain. Especially refrigerated or frozen ones can numb their gums with cold. You can even turn a frozen washcloth, or toothbrush to a teething toy as well.


Be careful on not ruining old sleeping habits
Try to use medicine for nighttime.

If your little one’s pain is difficult to stop and it’s keeping your baby all awake, you can try to use Tylenol, Motrin or Ibuprofen. However you should be checking it with your GP. And make sure that you avoid benzocaine, which is found in Anbesol and Orajel, since the FDA as it shouldn’t be administered to babies under age 2.

It is important that you don’t create new sleeping habits. If you try to reinforce a new habit by undoing the old already established one, it might confuse your baby and ruin the old habit. Your short-term comforting plan, such as co-sleeping, might generate new expectations  and attachments for your little one.
