Halloween Treats To Make With Little One

Trick or Treat, give me something good to eat! These nibbles are devilishly delicious.

Carving pumpkins, fake blood & skull candles are very on-Halloween-trend, but they’re not too baby friendly. Dress little one up as due-date Dracula or Baby of Frankenstein, and then get bonding over some baking. With some simple slicing and monster melting you can create five easy, safe, but mouth-watering treats.

Monstrous Mandarines

A healthy option for the little ones; these mandarine pumpkins can be served to anyone & are a great party platter option. You can let baby draw on the face – it might not be perfect, but it might look even more terrifying.

What You’ll Need:

  • 20 Mandarines (dependent on how many you’re feeding)
  • Sharpie

How To:

Draw faces on the mandarines in thin sharpie & colour them in with a thick one. Done!

 



Cereal Killer


These need some attention to detail, but they’re really cute. You can perfect one half and let little one get creative with the other. They’re fun to craft with your hands & everything can be eaten so it’ll definitely keep baby pre-occupied.

What You’ll Need:

  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 280g marshmallows
  • 6 cups rice krispie cereal
  • 10 drops yellow food colouring
  • 10 drops blue food colouring
  • Melted chocolate
  • Candy Eyes
How To:
  • Melt butter in a large pot & add marshmallow. Stir until melted.
  • Stir in green food colouring until blended.
  • Gradually add the rice krispie cereal.
  • Press rice krispie cereal into a greased 9×13 tin & let cool.
  • Let sit for 30 minutes.
  • Remove from the tin & cut into squares.
  • Melt chocolate & dip the tops of the squares into it, then lay on baking paper.
  • Use a ziplock bag filled with melted chocolate to stitch a mouth & dots for eyes.
  • Put candy eyes (or chocolate chips) on the eye dots.
  • Let cool for 20 minutes or until chocolate has set.




Bloody Bandage


Children love everything gross, so these plasters are perfect to keep them screaming. If you’re busy with little one & day-to-day activities, you can make these within 15 minutes. Everyone is going to want a wound!

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 packet white icing
  • 1 packet vanilla wafer biscuits
  • 2 tbsp strawberry jam
  • Box of plasters (decorative purposes only)
How To:
    • Roll out icing into a large square approx. 3mm thick.
    • Cut small squares to fit on the centre of the wafer biscuit.
    • Put on wafer & add a small amount of strawberry jam.
    • Place next to a plaster box to add to the ewww effect.


    Supernatural Strawberry

    Another almost healthy option, it includes one of your five a day, so we’ll discredit the chocolate aspect. Little one can easily help to dip the strawberries in chocolate, but beware, they might look like a vamp if they start nibbling!

    What You’ll Need:

    • 30 fresh strawberries
    • 250g of white chocolate
    • 1/4 cup of chocolate chips

     

    How to:

    • Wash strawberries and dry.
    • Melt chocolate either in the microwave or over a pan of boiling water until smooth.
    • Dip strawberries into the chocolate.
    • Place on baking paper, add chocolate chip eyes and freeze for 5minutes.
    • Enjoy!

     



    Wicked Worms

    This one’s for the slightly older children to help – it’s fun to make and even more interesting to devour. Dirt cups filled with worms is the ultimate dream for any little one looking for something to make their friends feel squeamish.

    What You’ll Need:

    For the pudding

    • 1/4 cup cornstarch
    • 1/2 cup of sugar
    • 1/8 of tsp salt
    • 3 cups of whole milk
    • 170g of dark chocolate
    • 2 tsp vanilla extract
    • For the dirt & worms
    • 1 cup of chocolate cook crumbs, blended or smashed (choose your favourite!)
    • 18 gummy worms (3 per cup)

    How To:

    • Combine cornstarch, sugar & salt in medium pan – whisk together.
    • Slowly pour in the milk, whisking whilst you do so. Whisk until all milk is added, and the mixture is consistent.
    • Place on a low to medium-low heat and stir frequently.
    • Stir until sauce is thickened – enough to coat the back of a spoon, which is approximately 10 minutes.
    • Add the chocolate and stir continuously for 2-4 minutes or until completely mixed in.
    • Remove the pan from the heat and add vanilla extract.
    • Spoon mixture into 6 small cups, distributing evenly. Refrigerate for 2 – 3 hours.
    • Push 3 gummy worms into the pudding so it looks like they’re wriggling out.
    • Sprinkle the cookie crumbs on top to look like the dirt.
    • Add more worms at your pleasure – how ever many you can stomach!
