We've collaborated with our friends at Nurturing Mums to bring you the best advice about sleep, weaning, baby development and first aid.

As part of Sleep Awareness week, we spoke to a few of their sleep experts & consultants to give you the best advice possible to help get your newborn baby sleeping through the night.

Maryanne Taylor from The Sleep Works and a Nurturing Mums sleep expert, has put together her top tips on how to create a bedtime routine for your baby, so that the whole family can have a better night's rest.


- A predictable and soothing bedtime routine to help your child wind down before bedtime is essential. Children thrive on predictability so having a consistent set of rituals leading up to bedtime is so important.- Starting early enough so they are not rushed through bedtime (& increasing parents stress levels!) is helpful in order to ensure a more relaxing lead up to bedtime.

- Avoid any screen usage (that includes TV) for up to 45 minutes before bedtime.

- The bedtime process (after a bath) should be in the room the child sleeps rather than moving from room to room as this can overstimulate a child at a time when you are trying to help them wind down.


- Keep lighting dim and interaction low key to help the production of melatonin, the natural sleep hormone.

- For older children, use a bedtime poster with pictures of each step of their bedtime routine. Your child can refer to this poster for each step of the process, making them feel more in control of their bedtime.

- Help your child to fall asleep independently without the need of a sleep crutch such as rocking, patting, or holding a parents hand as this becomes an association for your child with how they sleep. They will, therefore, expect the same from you if they wake during the night which often fuels night-time wake-ups.
